Tool talk

The art and hobby of ceramics is experiencing a resurgence, and in our consumer-driven world, it's easy to get swept up in the allure of fancy tools— from “those” carving tools to high-end pottery wheels. But what if you were stranded on a deserted island, with only one ceramic tool?

This question popped into my head after seeing a post on a pottery forum asking about favorite tools. The responses ranged from affordable options to tools costing hundreds. If money were no object, I would be the proud owner of a Peter Pugger ($5,000 plus), and while undeniably useful for reclaiming clay, that's a discussion for another time.

So… if forced to choose just one tool as my favorite—go-to essential—what would it be? What can’t I live without? The humble popsicle stick. It cuts, smooths coils, and with simple modification, is vital for crafting an ocarina whistle.

Yes, those fancy tools and accessories are fun, and of course can elevate your art. But let’s not lose sight of the craft that helps us reconnect with ourselves and find the flow state that shuts out all the noise. It need not be overly costly or complicated.

We welcome you to book a session with us at Meet the Maker Ceramic Studio, see for yourself the joy you can find in the simple act of pinching soft clay from the earth.

Wonderfully written Michelle. So eloquent. If I had to choose one tool, it would be water. Lol! Looking forward to future blogs.
